Digital Transformation of Libraries: From Traditional Services to Intelligent Knowledge Systems

Abstract

The digital transformation of academic libraries has significantly influenced the ways in which information resources are organized, accessed, managed, and delivered. The transition from traditional library services to technology-enabled environments has created new opportunities for developing intelligent knowledge systems through library automation, digital repositories, artificial intelligence, and data-driven information services. However, the adoption of these technologies requires appropriate infrastructure, professional competencies, institutional support, and organizational readiness. The present study aims to examine the digital transformation of academic libraries in India, with particular emphasis on technological adoption, professional preparedness, perceived service effectiveness, and emerging challenges. A quantitative, descriptive, and analytical survey research design is proposed. Primary data will be collected through a structured questionnaire administered to a target sample of 100–150 academic library professionals across India, using purposive sampling. The questionnaire will examine digital infrastructure, adoption of intelligent technologies, professional training, institutional support, perceived readiness, and barriers to technological integration. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques, including frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations. Appropriate inferential statistical tests will be considered to examine relationships among selected research variables, subject to measurement characteristics and statistical assumptions. The study is intended to provide evidence-based insights into the opportunities and constraints associated with the transition toward intelligent library services. Its findings may assist academic institutions, library administrators, and information professionals in developing context-sensitive strategies for sustainable digital transformation.
